So far, users have tested the beta release of the creator contract and have deployed 84 contracts and minted 250 NFTs.
According to a Twitter post on February 16, eBay's NFT marketplace, KnownOrigin, is launching a new creator smart contract for its artists. The smart contract will allow artists to earn royalties as co-creators and to split earnings. The Creator Contract beta release has been tested by users, with 84 contracts deployed and 250 NFTs minted so far. Starting from February 24, all approved creators on KnownOrigin will be able to deploy and mint their work on their own contract for public release without requiring coding knowledge.
Last June, eBay acquired KnownOrigin for an undisclosed sum. The platform is based on Ethereum and seeks to empower creators and collectors by allowing them to showcase, sell, and collect unique, authenticated digital items, according to co-founder David Moore.
Although eBay has allowed NFT listings on its direct marketplace since May 2021, it has not yet integrated blockchain technology to support transfers or crypto-based sales on its platform. During an airdrop in May, users were required to use in-platform messaging or email to receive their NFTs outside of the platform. eBay does not currently support listings soliciting payments or transfers in cryptocurrencies.
Established in 2020, KnownOrigin has built a specialized community of NFT artists and creators. One of its most popular collections is created by XCOPY and features 27 editions with 559 sales, as of now. The collection is known for its "digitally glitched" and flashing imagery artworks and has recorded more than 1,523.78 ETH (equivalent to $2.56 million) in total sales volume.
